The Agora was the beating heart of Athens in ancient Greece, the forum of all economic and social life. It was the place where Socrates philosophized, where democracy was invented in the latrines and where the world's first shopping center was built 2,000 years ago.

Around 600 BC, the Agora began to be developed as a public square. It wasn't until 500 BC that the Agora was formally demarcated by boundary stones. The horoi, erected at the entrances to the Agora, bore the inscription "ὅρος εἰμι τῆς ἀγορᾶς" (horos eimi tes agoras, "I am the boundary of the Agora"). The erection of the boundary stones was intended to prevent uncontrolled construction in the Agora. Criminals, conscientious objectors, and other people who were not welcome in the Agora were forbidden access.
