The small island of Ummanz, which is connected to Rügen by a bridge over the Focker Strom, lies with its natural wealth in the middle of the lagoon waters, surrounded by the Western Pomerania Lagoon Landscape National Park.
The uniqueness of the island is what attracts nature lovers and birdwatchers from everywhere, especially when around 70,000 cranes descend on the island in spring and autumn.
The small town of Waase picturesquely combines bodden, island and half-timbered idylls. Tourism information and a small national park exhibition are combined under the thatched roof of the Old Sexton.
