Just in the quiet forest, now right in the middle of the Ruhr Valley. The interesting, but also massive hydroelectric power station provides the matching visual backdrop, which is loudly supported by the motorway a little later. How good that the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path is much quieter again. :)

Due to the reparations to France after the lost First World War and the resulting growing shortage of coal as an energy supplier, the city decided to build a hydropower plant near the new Ruhr lock Raffelberg. The plant was to be positioned on the Ruhr Shipping Canal, which was not yet completed. The canal was to connect the Mülheim harbor, which was also under construction, with the Rhine-Herne Canal, the Duisburg-Ruhrort harbors and the Rhine.

The Ruhr lock Raffelberg and the hydropower plant were built in the 1920s to better connect the port of Mülheim to shipping on the Rhine and to reduce Mülheim's dependence on coal as an energy source. The power plant was put into operation in 1926, the lock in 1928. The 130 m long fish ladder was added in 2001.
