The Great Christopher monument (Latvian: "Lielais Kristaps") is closely linked to the legend of the origin of the city of Riga and is one of the most famous figures in the city's history. According to the legend, Great Christopher was a giant who carried people across the Daugava River. One night he carried a child across the river, which was getting heavier and heavier, and when he reached the other bank he was completely exhausted. The next morning he found a chest full of gold, which was used to build the city of Riga.
