The dyke owes its name to the notorious pirate Klaus Störtebeker, who made the North Sea unsafe in the 14th century. He found shelter in front of his pursuers, among other things in the municipality Marienhafe, which is located about 15 km from Greetsiel.
There still reminiscent of the Störtebekerturm to the pirate. To land at this shelter, he had to sail over today's Leysiel in the direction of Marienhafe. The cost of the shelter he "paid" with loot of his fishing trips.

The path along the Störtebekerdeich is the ideal cycling route. Absolutely smooth paved and wide enough to accommodate the many cyclists in the season. It's even nicer with a tailwind Rücken
