The university, founded in 1456 (known as Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Universität Greifswald from 1933 to 2018) is one of the oldest in Central Europe.

"The existence of a Greifswald University Library has been documented since 1604. The collections were housed in numerous educational buildings and later also in today's auditorium of the university's main building." From 1880 to 1882, the library building in Rubenowstraße was designed by architects Martin Gropius (1824-1880 ) and Heino Schmieden (1835-1913).
Today, the "Old Library" holds numerous special collections, including the "Pomeranica", which contains 30,000 volumes related to Pomerania, the "Altes Buch" collection of works from the beginnings of printing until 1850 and the History Library. The University of Greifswald is one of the oldest universities in Europe. The baroque main building with the old faculties in the middle of the old town is a particularly popular tourist destination.

The University of Greifswald, founded in 1456, is the second oldest in Northern Europe. It was founded on the initiative of the then mayor - and soon after the first rector - Heinrich Rubenow. Due to its long tradition, the University of Greifswald has numerous collections with several million objects like no other in Germany.
