The Johanniskirche in Plauen is the Protestant main church of the city. The consecration certificate of the predecessor church in the year 1122 is at the same time the first documentary mention of Plauen. The oldest parts of the present church come from a three-aisled Basilikabau, which was begun around 1224. In the northeast corner of the church is the chapel of the bailiffs, which was first mentioned in 1322. In a tomb under the chapel, the son of Henry III, the Langen, and his wife Agnes von Schwarzburg were buried (Wikipedia).

Consecrated in 1122, it is one of the oldest churches in the Vogtland. In 1224 it was donated to the Teutonic Order, which expanded the originally Romanesque basilica in the following years to its current size with a transept. A further conversion, into a three-aisled hall church with an impressive star vault, took place around 1548 and is considered a prime example of high Gothic interior design. The 52 m high twin towers received the baroque turrets in 1644 and have since shaped the silhouette of the city - visible from afar.
