The Côte d'Albâtre (Alabaster Coast) has numerous chalk cliffs, the most famous of which are on the steep coast of Étretat. The chalk cliffs, up to 100 meters high, protrude from the sea level and are attacked by the gnawing waves of the sea. The Alabaster Coast is located in the Seine-Maritime department in Upper Normandy

La Porte d'Aval, (the Gate of Aval), a huge flint arcade, was carved out by the waves as they hit the end of the cliff of Aval. "The Needle" (l'Aiguille), 51 metres high, is a witness to the geological past of the cliffs of Etretat.
