Land was purchased for a Catholic church and the foundation stone was laid in 1848. The first St. Stephen's, opened in 1850, is the oldest building on site and one of the oldest in the city. The tiny church became a cathedral when James Quinn was appointed the first bishop of the diocese in 1859.
With its 137-meter-high tower and ornate roof, it is the city's most significant Gothic structure and represents eight centuries of architectural history. Only the massive gate and the pagan towers remain of the original 13th-century structure
