Foundation for Common Land

The charity working across the country to protect and enrich the natural and cultural heritage of commons and commoning.

Commons are areas of land owned by one person or organisation where commoners have the right to graze sheep, cattle, pigs or horses, or use its resources. It has protected the land for thousands of years - ensuring the survival of precious ancient monuments and rare wildlife.

These centuries old farming practices are unexpectedly relevant to many 21st century challenges. Sustainable commoning can help nurture habitats, enhance biodiversity, prevent flooding and absorb carbon from the atmosphere. Alongside all this, they create incredible spaces for everyone to enjoy.

Stretching north to south, the upland commons are free for everyone to enjoy and welcome millions of visitors each year. You can get close to nature, explore ancient monuments, take in some of the most iconic views in the country and encounter famous breeds of sheep, horses and cattle.

To help you explore the heritage of these picturesque landscapes, take up one of our walking trails. As you wander over peaks or along riverbanks, you'll be able to read stories about everything the land has to offer.

This use of land for pasture has protected landscapes for over 1,000 years. Grazing maintains the balance of

Spend a day with us exploring the Shropshire Hills AONB. A lot of this walk is off the common itself, but there’s an option to extend the part which is on the common, giving extensive views of it from the surrounding farm land.
