The next morning, the sky is blue again, and I get off to an early start. The kilometers before the sun peeks over the mountains are the best. The stage isn't long, but it's painful. These approximately 8 kilometers are pushing me to my limits today. Steep gravel paths up, scrambling over vast scree…

The original plan was to take a leisurely stroll through the Valle de Estós to Benasque and end my tour there. It's a nice GR11 stage that I'm already familiar with. It's also described as a bad-weather alternative to the HRP (The Pyrenean Haute Route, Tom Martens). But I haven't had bad weather so far…

After breakfast at the hostel, the stage begins for Camping Forcallo in the Valle de Chistau. It's a well-marked GR11 stage, which I still remember well. I have to climb an endless gravel road. The descent through the valley is all the more beautiful for it. The campsite is busy. I treat myself to a…

In the morning, I'm woken by a flock of sheep grazing the meadow around my tent. So I pack up and first climb up the Port de Barroude. Then begins the long descent to Parzan. I already know the place from my hike on the GR11. I also know the hostel, which fortunately still has a room available.

I start the stage with Michael from France. From Héas, it's about 1,000 meters uphill to the Hourquette de Héas. The last few meters to the pass are very exposed and steep. Michael has a panic attack and doesn't go any further. I think about it for a moment, then quickly bring my backpack up to the pass…

In the morning, I stroll through the still-empty Gavarnie and buy a few supplies. Many day trippers hike the famous Cirque du Gavarnie. I, on the other hand, climb the Hourquette d'Alans. The trail then descends through the beautiful Vallée d'Estaube to Lac des Gloriettes. I have to take the last stretch…

The morning begins with another climb, which gets my circulation going right away. At the top of the Hourquette d'Ossoue, the climb to the Petit Vignemale is a good option. I see people scrambling up there...and decide not to bother. 🙂 Instead, I enjoy the long descent to Gavernie, past an impressive…

On the stage to Oulettes de Gaube, we first cross the Col d'Arratille and then the Col des Mulets. The route is a bit rough at times on gravel roads, but manageable. I rush to get a meal at the refuge today. I manage it and order chili con carne and an omelet. The campsite in front of the refuge offers…

From the Refugio de Respomuso, I continue east. There are also nice camping options here. Finally, I climb the Col de la Fache. There, I have the opportunity to climb the Grande Fache. I climb with two Frenchmen who have been hiking the same route with their family group since the first day. We leave…

Strengthened and well-rested, we begin the final stage. The three of us are on the ascent to the Col Inférieur, still pleasantly cool. We make good progress and finally reach the pass, the highest point of the HRP. Today is much easier for me again. We look down at spectacular lakes and snowfields. The…
