Rye to Dover day three: Folkestone to Dover

Finally we hit some elevation! This is a beautiful route with some not easy inclines that offers epic clifftop views towards the white cliffs of Dover and back to Folkestone. A glorious three days – video on YouTube of the full adventure to follow!

My longest ever walk! A fairly early start from our accommodation in Lydd, out the door by 7.30am we bought a few snacks and headed off. The route started by walking us along the edge of the Lydd military range, which was more interesting than you'd expect, and then made it to the equally bleak but more beautiful Dungeness. After that there was a fair bit of sea wall walking, which got a little monotonous, but we got a bit of variation via the Royal Military Canal where I spotted by first ever kingfisher – what an epic sight. We got back to the coast at Hythe and followed the water, and Folkestone couldn't come soon enough. Some sor feet and legs to nurse before heading out for a(nother) curry. Back at it tomorrow!

Brought back lots of memories, love the bleakness of Dungeness. Great effort.

A quite bleak but beautiful first of three days walking the coast from Rye to Dover. We had to take a pretty significant detour due to Komoot plotting us on non-public footpaths, so there was more road walking than ideal, but we made it to the coast at Camber and followed it until reaching the military ranges at Lydd. A long day ahead of us tomorrow so we're checked in at the hotel and need to find somewhere to eat before an early night.

Done! Tired bodies going in to day three and more challenging than we expected, with lots of up and down and some difficult terrain. Beautiful views, breakfast at Mousehole, and then a breeze to Penzance. Left knee is wrecked but otherwise body held up well. Great (and often challenging!) weekend.

Another beautiful day – more variation today to break up the walk including Land's End and a chip shop stop in Sennen, but still plenty of epic coastline views, with dramatic waves thanks to storm Amy. Physically tougher than yesterday, although psychologically easier thanks to the drier weather. Longer than planned as result of me navigating us to the wrong campsite, and having an hour longer to walk than expected (and now leftover hobnobs for tea as no nearby pub or cafe to this campsite 😅)

An epic, challenging, beautiful first of three days walking from station to station – St Ives to Penzance – on the South West Coast Path. This first bit of the route has nothing between the start and the end in terms of provisions so it was just us, the sea, and – increasingly throughout the day – Storm Amy. Rain, wind, but mild so plenty of chance to stay warm and dry quickly after getting wet. Some quite technical sections and basically constantly up and down, and quite a bit of mud already. Glad to be in an Airbnb rather than camping!

Wow, this route was really excellent... I know this bit of the Thames path was nice but I forgot how much this path doesn't feel like London (in the best way). Riverside woodland, interesting industrial areas, pretty (and very posh!) neighbourhoods – and passing Craven Cottage on match day just before kick off too. It might also be the quietesy London walk I've done in terms of road traffic noise too. Windy mind!

Weather was against us today which threatened to rock morale but the views didn't disappoint. A bit of a slow start today as we had to burn time to wait for the cafe to open, but needed to fuel up because there was basically nothing else on the route for hours. Another beautiful route with some tough ups and downs and technical terraine, ending in the very pretty looking town of Newport. Great part of the country for walking

A challenging but glorious first of three days hiking the Wales Coastal Path heading south from Cardigan. We had planned to start from Poppit but weren't able to get a bus so that added some distance to the route. Very beautiful scenes right on the coast, some difficult inclines and declined, but worth it for the views. Towards the end of the day leaving the path to head to our campsite the public footpath we were following came up to a field with bulls and young cows behaving in a way that didn't feel great, so we had to take a long way round. A long day and some sore shoulders but legs and feet feeling good. Weather has taken a turn for the worse today so let's see how we get on...

As part of my 'Pub walks from the Windrush Line' collection, this short and easy route takes no time getting straight into nature, passing interesting sights and stopping off at two hidden pub gems. Expect to see not one but two great views of London, peaceful woodland with a few hidden secrets, and you'll learn where Honor Oak gets its name. The Ivy House, London's first community-owned pub is a beautiful pub with a great programme of live music and a pool table to boot; and the Earl of Derby is an underrated classic with a modern, cosy feel.
