Cume do Monte Zas (Naxos)

The sunrise is a dream. But: if you start at 5 a.m., dress warmly, pack a small snack, don't forget water and better use headlamps!

The mountain can be climbed over two routes. Either over the chapel Agia Marina (about 1.5 hours from the chapel to the summit) or over the cave of Zeus (more difficult). Both routes can be reached by public bus from Naxos Town.

Great hike to the highest point in the Cyclades. I took the easier route starting from the Agia Marina chapel (not much parking available) which took an hour to get to the top The trail is well marked except for the last section to the summit where you need to look at for the stone piles indicating the way to go. I would recommend walking boots even if most people are in trainers as there are many opportunities for sprained ankles ! Leave early - I stared at 7.15am and by the time I was coming down an hour later the heat was picking up (most of the trail is exposed). Take plenty of water and sun cream if walking in summer.
