The air base was rebuilt between 1937 and 1938 for the then German Air Force. The runway had a grass surface. To the north of the air base there were two very large and three large aircraft hangars and a large repair hangar. Behind the hangars there were additional commercial and accommodation buildings. The first flying unit to be stationed here was II./KG 27, from August 1939. Various pilot and unit leader schools were also housed here from 1939 to 1945. On February 4, 1945, Soviet troops occupied the air base. Königsberg i.d.Nm. became Polish in 1945 and was renamed Chojna. The Soviet Air Force expanded it and used it throughout the Cold War. On May 5, 1992, the 582nd Fighter Aviation Regiment left the airfield and moved to Smolensk. The Soviets handed over the airfield to the Polish authorities on July 7, 1992.
