Starting from the second half of the twentieth century it was entirely covered with precious marbles and rich gilded and polychrome mosaics. The origins of Pizzighettone are linked to the river Adda, which still today characterizes the historic center, dividing it into two parts, one of which, on the right bank and named Gera, according to tradition, would have arisen in the vicinity of the Etruscan Acerra. The first certain documents date back to the medieval period, a time when the village, also because of the trade favored by its location, becomes a place of contention between the municipalities of Milan and Cremona. Pizzighettone's "martial" destiny will continue during the long Spanish domination, which will bring substantial changes to the city walls, as well as throughout the following period, characterized by Austrian occupations, interrupted by the Napoleonic parenthesis, until the Unification of Italy. Pizzighettone presents the only circle of walls almost intact in the province of Cremona and one of the most impressive among those that have survived in Lombardy. The current appearance derives from the "reform" implemented, as was said, in the Spanish era, little altered by the subsequent alterations. Other destinations worthy of a visit are the "Torrione" on the banks of the Adda, perhaps the place of detention of the king of France , in which fragments of frescoes survive and which with the "mozza tower" is the only remnant of the ancient castle demolished several times in the nineteenth century; the façade of the Palazzo Comunale dating back to the fifteenth century and the churches. Among these, the oldest is the parish church dedicated to San Bassiano, with a beautiful façade in Romanesque style, in terracotta, whose compactness, refined by a polylobed ornament that runs through the sloping gables, acquires lightness in the magnificent central rose window. Inside, the Crucifixion by Bernardino Campi and the fourteenth-century marble panels in the chapel of the Madonna del Rosario are unmissable.
