In addition to a wonderful time travel through the history of coal mining, you can enjoy the beautiful nature and make a detour to an old castle ruins with fantastic views over the Ruhr and the surrounding area. A very versatile hike.

This Göpelhaus is also located on the mining circuit in Muttental. It is reminiscent of the Mosess shaft, which was sunk here in 1840. The tons-length Moses shaft dismantled the Anclam seam and reached down to the bottom of the St. Johannes Erbstollen. Cross cuts were made on the bottom of the Erbstollen into the seams of Stettin, Arrival and Love. After the four seams were exposed and dismantled, the Göpel shaft in Moses was shut down again in May 1847.

Göpelschacht: A Göpelschacht, or horse gopel, is a conveying device in which a horse always runs in a circle and winds a conveyor rope onto a drum. The shaft itself could take several tons but could also lead deeper into the depths.

No other region shows in such a diverse and impressive way the evidence of early mining coupled with a wild romance of the valley, forests and the leisurely babbling Muttenbach - knowing full well that you are still in the actually densely built-up Ruhr area. Here in Muttental the first coal was probably found in the Ruhr area. ... "

On the mining circular route, there is a board with some information at every tunnel / mine, which even many "Ruhrpottlers" did not know yet.
For this reason, it is worth stopping the hike for a moment to read up.

The Moses Göpelschacht belonged to the Vereinigte Ankunft und Anclam colliery, was around 100 m deep and was in operation from 1840 to 1847. The reconstructed Göpelhaus shows a conveyor technology that was used in the Ruhr mining industry when the shafts were so deep that it would have been too difficult to extract them using a hand winch. A horse was harnessed to a crossbeam in the Göpelhaus. When it ran in a circle, it moved the beam with the cable drum around which the conveyor cable was wound. Conveyor vessels were attached to both ends of the cable. While the barrel filled with mine water or coal was pulled up, the empty one moved downwards at the same time.

Operations at the Blondine shaft ended around 1840. For this purpose, the Moses shaft was sunk further east. The Moses shaft was located in the Anclam seam and reached to the Erbstollen floor. At this depth, as with the Blondine shaft, there was a crosscut to the south to the Ankunft seam, which was extended in 1844 to the Stettin seam and beyond to the narrow Liebe coal strip. In the four seams that had now been opened up, the mining area reached as far as the Muttental. When all usable coal had been mined up to the Erbstollen, which was about 35 m deeper than the Muttenbach, operations were stopped in May 1847.
