    Wattenheim Weschnitz Bridge - Lorsch 🚴‍

    The Wattenheim Bridge is a historic structure from the late 18th century and is located in the triangle formed by the Hessian Ried communities of Lorsch, Einhausen, and Bensheim. Here, it serves as a crossing over the Weschnitz River.
    The habitat around the bridge, with sufficient agricultural land and excellent opportunities for gathering, hunting, and fishing, ensured that people settled here in prehistoric and early historical times. Archaeological finds at the bridge range from the Neolithic period to the Roman period. An axe, an arrowhead, a hoe, and a storage vessel were found from the Neolithic period (3000–1800 BC). Among other things, a coin bearing the image of Emperor Nerva, dated to 96–98 AD, was found at the Wattenheim Bridge. Remains of a Roman swamp bridge were discovered at the Wattenheim Bridge.
    The bridge was originally called the Watter Bridge because it led into Wattenrodt, a marsh clearing in what is now Großenacker. The original wooden bridge was replaced by the current stone structure in 1774. Until 1802, the bridge served as a customs post between Hesse and the Electorate of Mainz.

    The historic crossing is convenient and easily passable for cyclists and pedestrians in both directions.🚴‍♂️
