To get to the Zwarteberg, make a short detour over the Belgian-French border. Although the mountain is beyond the border, it has been part of the Gent-Wevelgem route several times. The name Zwarteberg, Mont Noir or Black Mountain comes from the black pine forests that surround it.

The hill is located on the French-Belgian border, the top at 152 meters. On the French side, the slope is called Mont Noir, after the hamlet of the same name at the top. The name comes from the family name De Zwarte who owned the mountain in the 13th and 14th centuries.

The Zwarteberg is located against the Vidaigneberg, Rodeberg and Baneberg. There are many shops and catering establishments on the Zwarteberg, which are mainly visited by the French at weekends and which ensures very busy border tourism. On French territory stands the old house of the parents of Marguerite Yourcenar, after whom a departmental park on the spot is named. On the French south flank is also a military cemetery from the First World War, Mont Noir Military Cemetery.
