The old Levensau High Bridge was built at the end of the 19th century for railway and tram traffic. The new, eastern Levensau High Bridge was built about 90 years later as a motorway and is not accessible by bicycle. The old high bridge is still accessible and offers a breathtaking panorama of the Kiel Canal. Photographers will love this spot! The bridge also provides shelter for around 6,000 bats in winter. According to the Waterways and Shipping Authority, the bridge's technical service life is expected to end in 2024. Access is frequently closed due to construction work. It's best to check whether the bridge is currently accessible before visiting. Information is available at: wsa-kiel.wsv.de.

It is an arched bridge that was the largest bridge when the canal was rebuilt. Striking are the wintering quarters of the bats at the abutments of the bridge.

Of all bridges, this is truly one of the nicer! Always worth a photo 📷
Unfortunately, the last days are numbered -
after 125 years, this bridge will unfortunately be demolished again😢
        But
        still worth a photo 📷

In April 2019, as part of the preparations for the replacement construction of the first Levensau High Bridge, work will begin on the reconstruction and renovation of the bridge's southern abutment. The abutments of the existing high bridge are home to one of Central Europe's largest winter quarters for numerous bat species.

For nature conservation reasons, the preservation of the winter quarters for bats is a prerequisite for the entire replacement construction of the first Levensau High Bridge.

In order not to disturb the bats' hibernation periods, the work will only be carried out from April to September 2019. While the northern abutment will be dismantled as part of the new bridge construction, the southern abutment will remain after its reconstruction as part of the replacement construction of the high bridge without any static load.

From April 15 to September 1, 2019, the Old Levensau High Bridge will be closed to road traffic, and rail traffic on the Gettorf-Kiel section will be suspended from July 1 to August 10, 2019. The bridge is expected to be impassable for cyclists and pedestrians from April 22 to May 5, 2019. "Road traffic will be diverted via the B76, which will be open in both directions between the Steenbek/Projensdorf and Felm/Neuwittenbek junctions from mid-April to the beginning of September, also for vehicles with a maximum speed of less than 60 km/h," explains project manager Thomas Janßen. "A free shuttle bus service, which will also accommodate bicycles, will be set up for pedestrians and cyclists between Suchsdorf and Neuwittenbek from April 15 to May 15." During the suspension of the rail line, a rail replacement service will run between Eckernförde and Kiel in the summer.

            ....is to be demolished soon...

That makes me sad, because for me wistful childhood memories are attached to this bridge: I often crossed it when I cycled back to Kiel from collecting potatoes in the fall Pair of panniers and the tent.
In October it gets dark early and if you were late, you got this wonderful sunset light up from the bridge for free.

And then there was the small island in the canal, not far from the Levensauer. A very special bathing place, because if there was a larger pot on the outside of the fairway, there was a brilliant countercurrent on the other side of the island. We always went in there and let ourselves be carried away, knowing full well that we could hold on to the ropes at each end. A lot of fun, but not without danger, which is probably why the island was later dredged away, because the ships got bigger and bigger.

It's been a long time, it was in the second half of the 1950s. How good that I crossed "my old Levensauer" again last year (2019) on a bike tour.

The old iron bridge unfortunately has to give way. In the course of the widening of the canal, it must be demolished because the abutments are too narrow.

You must have seen the oldest canal crossing. It has existed since the beginning of the NOK, this year (2020) it celebrates its 126th birthday.

The Levensauer is still the most beautiful bridge far and wide 🥰...
But unfortunately we won't be able to enjoy it for too long because it will be replaced by a new one 😪...
The construction work goes on and on. And I hope that in this case the work will continue for a very long time before the "beautiful red one" is demolished 🤔...

Anyone who has made it to the top has a great view of the NOK, Kiel and the surrounding area.
Be careful on the ascent and descent, the bike path is scary or blocked and not all car drivers stick to the 50km.

                                      !! As of September 10th, 2020 !!
The canal path (north side) under the Levensau high bridge is closed.
                                      A detour is not signposted.

                                              Old Levensau High Bridge
The western, older of the two bridges is located along Eckernförder Straße.
It was built between 1893 and 1894 as a combined railway and road bridge and is 180 meters long. The foundation stone was laid on June 21, 1893, and
it was inaugurated on December 3, 1894. At the time, it was considered the largest welded iron bridge in Germany.

                                              Until 1915, road traffic and trains shared a common route;
At that time, the road was closed to train traffic as needed by barriers. As early as 1928, the bridge required major renovation because it had subsided and cracks several centimeters deep had appeared in the masonry of the towers. In 1938, the bridge was supposed to be replaced by a new bridge 3 kilometers further west. This could not be done due to the war. In 1953/54, the bridge was adapted to the demands of increased road traffic by widening the roadway, increasing the bridge's load-bearing capacity from 22 to 60 tons, and removing the portal towers designed by Hermann Muthesius.

As a road bridge, the bridge was located along the Bundesstraße 76 (Federal Highway 76) until the construction of the eastern bridge. Since then, only Kreisstraße 27 has crossed the bridge. As a railway bridge, it is part of the Kiel-Eckernförde-Flensburg railway line. The bridge has a steel truss arch intersected by the roadway.

It is accessible and offers a good photo spot to the west.
