The Pfaffendorf moated castle is a beautiful and imposing building that was built between 1531 and 1546 under Wilhelm von dem Bongard entirely of brick in the Renaissance style on the foundations of a previous building. The two-part complex is surrounded by a large moat that used to be fed from the Erft. It is accessible through two opposing gate structures at the interface between the outer and main castle. A gate leads to the park. The front side of the palace faces the park.
To the northwest is a three-sided outer bailey with the farm buildings. Wall anchors with the years 1745 and 1753 show the date when these components were rebuilt.
From 1861 to 1865 the castle was rebuilt by Ludwig von dem Bongart in the neo-Gothic style according to the taste of the time and according to the plans of the Cologne architect August Carl Lange. So she received turrets, battlements, balustrades and balconies.

Paffendorf Castle Park
Today's castle includes a 7.5 hectare park. In the 19th century, the castle park was created by redesigning an older garden.

The forest teaching garden gives an impression of the flora of the Tertiary. Although there is little left of the subtropical vegetation of that time in our latitudes, descendants of primeval trees, shrubs and moor plants from other parts of the world provide visitors with a living picture of the Tertiary in the truest sense of the word. Two mighty Sequoia stumps, around 15 million years old, flank the entrance to the palace park as remnants of primeval flora. Their high natural content of tannic acid prevents decomposition over millions of years, so that they could be found in an open pit in good condition.
