The Holzberg Tower is almost back up. However, the tower is no longer made of wood, but of steel. It also takes its name from the Holzberg on which it stands. It will have 140 steps and two platforms at heights of 16 and 24 meters. I was able to see first hand how the roof was put together. A lot of the work is being done on a voluntary basis, I could see from the information board. It should be possible to climb it again from May.

After a long wait, the new and third tower on the Holzberg in Malente in the Neversfelde district opened on May 2, 2020. After about three years of demolition, planning and new construction, a new 30-meter-high tower is now shining, which you can reach via 147 steps. The new Holzberg tower rises almost 90 meters above sea level. It was constructed from galvanized steel, partially powder-coated, and consists of five levels. If the surrounding trees have grown so high that the view is impaired, it is possible to raise the tower. There are numerous signs on and around the tower that tell about the landscape of Holstein Switzerland as well as about the animals and plants.

The first Holzberg Tower was designed in 2000 by members of the Neversfelde Beautification Association. Construction began in June 2004 and was completed in spring 2005. The 28.5-meter-high tower, constructed of larch wood, opened in July 2005. Construction cost €40,000. It was open year-round and free of charge. 140 steps of a steel spiral staircase led to the tower's 64-square-meter-high observation deck, 24 meters above the ground. From here, visitors could enjoy a panoramic view of Malente, Lake Dieksee, and the surrounding Holstein Switzerland.

Two towers previously stood at this location on the Holzberg. As early as 1908, an observation tower for visitors to Holstein Switzerland, the so-called Bismarck Tower, was built on this site in honor of Bismarck. However, there was a lack of funds for its maintenance during the First World War, so it was demolished in 1918 due to the danger of collapse.

It wasn't until 80 years later that a new tower was commissioned by members of the Neversfelde Beautification Association. Since 2005, visitors to the region have once again been able to enjoy the rolling hills and lake landscape. Unfortunately, the new larch wood tower had a construction flaw that caused feet to constantly get wet, and it ultimately had to be demolished in 2017. Here on the Holzberg, you can still find the roofed platform of the old tower, which now serves as a pavilion.
