The legend of the eye of the needle

In the old days, when merchants and carters still used horse-drawn carts to sell their goods in remote Harz villages, an old trade route ran through Ilfeld. From here the Goetheweg branches off, on which the privy councilor von Goethe took his first journey to the Harz Mountains in 1777 on horseback
rode into the Harz mountains in a coat bag.

This said Goetheweg leads past a boulder that has a narrow cleft. The legend tells of this boulder that a giant once shook it out of its shoe because the block in it pressed so hard.

All carters, dealers and forest workers who wanted to get wood from the forest had to pass this stone. If only one carter was hired, it was customary for him to crawl through this narrow crevice on his first trip to the jeers and laughter of his comrades.
