In the northern part of the Kootenay Park are the so-called Paint Pots - cold mineral springs whose water is colored by dissolved iron compounds and have formed the small ponds and basins. They are located in an easily accessible geologically interesting area with long cultural and historical significance, because even the First Nations have mined the yellow to brown-red ocher mud here - which is present everywhere - to gain color pigments or dyes for their rock paintings or ceremonies. Later, the ocher was also promoted by European settlers and became a sought-after commodity. The Paint Pots are still among the holy places, so it is important to stay on the trails and not to remove earth.
