Once a year, the crossroads in the forest where the wayside shrine stands is filled with people when Catholics from the Urles communities make a star-shaped pilgrimage to the “Red Marter”. The name “Red Marter” is said to come from a sacrificial site in the forest near Reichmannshausen, where Germanic tribes once shed the blood of sacrificial animals. According to legend, there is an undiscovered treasure slumbering in the ground near the “Red Marter”. The wayside shrine is - along with four other wayside shrines, a fountain house and a Nepomuk figure - part of a circular hiking trail. This seven and a half kilometer long circular route begins in Aidhausen near the festival hall, is mostly gravel and suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. On it you can easily find the “Red Marter”, from which it is only three kilometers to Lake Ellertshäuser.
