The place is really unique with the scattered houses. This is clearly visible from the dike. After the revolution of 1848/49, the farmers were allowed to “buy themselves free” from all taxes to the landlords. But since in Neuendorf (and Plogshagen!) everything apart from the houses was shared, they then - unlike in Vitte - only owned their house. This has practically “preserved” the situation ever since. Until 1945, the monastery of the Holy Spirit in Stralsund, as the owner of the island, slowed down the urban sprawl and even then there were repeated efforts on the part of the administration to secure this legally...
