Hildesheim, one of the oldest cities in northern Germany, Hildesheim was founded in 815 as a bishopric near a ford of the Innerste River. The settlement developed very quickly into a city, which was founded in 983 by King Otto III. received market rights. Originally the market was held on a street called “Old Market” and still exists today.
The first market square was created around the church of St. Andreas. As the city continued to grow, a larger marketplace became necessary.

Today's market square in Hildesheim was laid out at the beginning of the 13th century, when the city had around 5,000 inhabitants. When Hildesheim received city rights in 1249, it was one of the largest cities in northern Germany. The construction of today's town hall began in 1268. Several impressive half-timbered houses were also built on the market square. The butchers’ guild hall “Knochenhaueramtshaus” was the highest and most famous of them.
