The protected area belongs to the catchment area of the small river Drentsche Aa, which gave the national park its name. The special value of the landscape results above all from the naturalness of the Drentschen Aa and its surroundings. Thus, the character of the area has not changed significantly since the mid-19th century, especially the Drentsche Aa was not diked, which is very untypical for the rivers and streams of the Netherlands. The national park lies partly on the approximately 25 meters high hill back Hondsrug, which pulls itself from the Drentschen plateau up to the Hogeland at the coast.

In addition to protected nature areas such as heathland, grasslands, small forest areas and sand drifts, the park also includes the first archaeological reserve in the Netherlands, De Strubben-Kniphorstbosch. Here are, among other things, some megalithic tombs and burial mounds.
