The first avenue of linden trees was laid out in 1663 during the reign of the Bayreuth Margrave Christian Ernst (1655-1712).
The avenue was part of the changes that were to turn the former Himmelkroner monastery into the summer residence of the Bayreuth margraves. They played paille-maille (English: Pall Mall), a running game in which the wooden balls were hit with the ball mallet. The object was to hit a boxwood ball, about the size of a modern croquet ball at about a foot in circumference (about 30 cm), down the lane and through the hoop with as few strokes of a heavy wooden mallet as possible .
There were similar avenues at many castles at that time. Many cities and historic parks still have long, straight streets or boardwalks that evolved from these fairways. Two of these streets in London are "Pall Mall" and "The Mall", in Hamburg-Altona there is still the "Palmaille".
The avenue in Himmelkron was famous in its day and was said to be the longest and most beautiful in Europe. The Margravine of Bayreuth, Wilhelmine of Prussia (1709-1758), mentioned her in her memoirs.
When the game went out of fashion, some of these Pall Malls developed into shopping malls - hence the current designation of shopping malls in the USA as shopping malls. Others turned into leafy, shady promenades, which are often called malls even today.
However, the approximately 800 trees along the avenue in Himmelkron were cut down by Prussian soldiers in 1792 at the behest of Margrave Christian Friedrich Karl Alexander (1769-1791) against the resistance of the population in order to restructure the state budget.
In October 1986 the first trees were planted again, in April 1992 District President Dr. Erich Haniel the last linden tree to commemorate the deforestation 200 years before.

The Baille-Maille-Lindenallee is an avenue lined with linden trees in the Upper Franconian municipality of Himmelkron in the district of Kulmbach.
The first avenue of linden trees was planted in 1662-1663 during the reign of Margrave Christian Ernst. The avenue was part of the change measures that were to turn the former Himmelkron monastery into a hunting lodge for the margraves. They played paille-maille, a piston or barrel game. There were similar avenues at many castles at that time. The avenue in Himmelkron was famous in its day and was said to be the longest and most beautiful in Europe. Margravine Wilhelmine mentioned them in her memoirs. In 1792, against the resistance of the population, it was cut down by Prussian soldiers in order to rehabilitate the state budget.
On October 17, 1986, 160 trees were planted again. On April 28, 1992, District President Dr. Erich Haniel the last linden tree to commemorate the deforestation 200 years ago.

There is also space for art on Baille-Maille-Allee. The Münchberg artist Udo Rödel erected two granite steles here on the edge of the avenue in 2004. They were created from Reinersreuth granite millions of years old. He called the work "weighty encounters - weighting encounters".
