A typical Ruhrpott-Trassenradweg in its most beautiful form. It begins at the marina on the Rhine-Herne Canal and leads over about eight kilometers former railway line to Recklinghausen-Suderwich.

The route is named after the König Ludwig colliery, which began coal mining in 1885 in the south of Recklinghausen. This in turn had its name from the Bavarian fairy tale king Ludwig II, who had the famous castle Neuschwanstein built near Füssen.
