The Protestant church in Zarrentin on the Schaalsee was dedicated to the two saints Peter and Paul (Peter and Paul), also known as the "prince of the apostles". Their common feast day in the calendar of saints is June 29th.
      * Simon, nicknamed Peter (Rock), was a fisherman on Lake Genesareth when he - together with his brother Andrew - was called by Jesus Christ to be a "fisher of men". According to Catholic understanding, he is the highest apostle, and the two thousand year long line of popes - currently Francis - are his successors. In statues and paintings, Peter is almost always depicted with two keys in his hand; this attribute refers to the Bible verse in Matthew: "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." (Chapter 16, Verse 19).
      * Paul was initially an opponent of the Christian movement and was not called to the apostleship of Jesus Christ during his lifetime like the other apostles, but was only converted later with the famous "Damascus experience". His attribute is the sword with which he was executed. According to the Roman law of the time, such a sentence was a "privilege" (quick death and not, like other types of execution, associated with a long, painful death struggle) that was available to the citizens of Rome.

The Protestant church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Zarrentin am Schaalsee is based on a Romanesque fieldstone building. The historical roots of Zarrentin am Schaalsee can certainly be seen in a Slavic settlement, which also played a role in the naming. Parts of the fieldstone masonry on the south side and the choir date from that time. After 1460, the nave was built in the Gothic style. The small bell tower on the west side, on the other hand, was only added to the nave as part of renovation work in the second half of the 17th century. The interior is characterized by 3 large rectangular cross-ribbed vaults. The Renaissance pulpit decorated with wooden reliefs, created in 1533/34 by the Lübeck master Benedikt Dreyer, adorned the Lübeck Marienkirche for more than 150 years and is considered to be the oldest Protestant pulpit in northern Germany. In 1699 it was bought by the Zarrentin pastor Nikolaus Andreae for 100 Lübeck marks and brought to its current location. In the chancel there are well-preserved Romanesque and Gothic wall paintings from the first half of the 14th century. In the pointed arch niches of the chancel there are 8 apostle figures. The baroque altar dates from 1733.
