There are several islands in the Schaalsee. Some of them are uninhabited and provide sheltered homes for rare animal and bird species.
The largest island in the lake is the island of Kampenwerder. It is 2.5 square kilometers and home to 30 residents. Kampenwerder is one of the most popular excursion destinations in the Schaalsee region.
Kampenwerder is connected to the neighboring island of Stintenburg by an artificial dam. From there it goes over another dam to the mainland. The Stintenburginsel is home to the Bernstorff family, who owns large estates in the region. The family seat looks back on a long history.
The sad climax was the murder of Count Albrecht von Bernstorff in April 1945 by the Gestapo because of alleged anti-state sentiments under the Nazi regime. Today the family lives again on the Stintenburginsel and maintains a large agricultural estate there in harmony with nature.

A navigable dam connects today the island with the Mecklenburg side in the east as well as the inhabited and also to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania belonging island Kampenwerder in the west.

The estate Stintenburg was in the 13th century in the possession of the Counts of Schwerin. Then followed Duchess Christine Margarete Mecklenburg in the years 1642-1680. Furthermore came and went from Lützow, von Bülow and Hammerstein. In 1740, the estate came into the possession of the family of Bernstorff. In 1767, the German poet Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock stayed on Stintenburginsel and dedicated the Ode Stintenburg to her.

Since the restitution in 1993 Gut and Herrenhaus are once again in the possession of the family von Bernstorff. The island is inhabited by the family and some employees and is located in the biosphere reserve Schaalsee. It is therefore subject to some special protection regulations.
