"Forsthaus Neuhaus" is a nature conservation project initiated by NABU Saarland e. V., the SaarForst State Enterprise, and the Saarland Ministry for the Environment. The heart of the forest house is the "Scheune Neuhaus," which houses a "Center for Forest Culture." In addition to forest and eco-educational exhibitions, guided tours and activities on a wide variety of ecological aspects are offered year-round. One focus of work is the "Primeval Forest at the Gates of the City" project, which began in 1997 and was funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU). Since then, all forestry activities and landscape conservation measures have been avoided on an area of approximately 1,000 hectares. Nature can spread and develop as it pleases. Over the years, a primeval forest with new communities of animals and plants will develop. The project is accompanied by rangers from the Saarland Nature Watch.
