The Alster springs in the area of the municipality Henstedt-Ulzburg. Its source is located in the north of the district Henstedt-Rhen. From there, the partly meandering river runs first to the north and bends a few hundred meters further downstream to the east. After passing through Wakendorf II and coming from the north Rönne at the height of the peasantry Naherfurth and the sub-crossing of the B 432 (south of Nahe), the river Alster finally turns south. The Oberalster lowlands between Wakendorf II in the district of Segeberg and Tangstedt in the district of Stormarn originated from the silting of a shallow ice lake formed in the Weichselian glacial period. The Upper Alster was channeled in the 15th century during the construction of the Alster-Best Canal (also: Alster-Trave Canal) to create a direct waterway between Hamburg and Lübeck.
