After knight Herman Hoen had received the place Gebrook as a gift in 1388, the line living there added the place to their name to distinguish it from other lines of the Hoen family and called themselves Hoen tzo Broeck, Hoen van den Broeck and finally van Hoensbroeck, in German from ( and to) Hoensbroech. The name Hoensbroek then passed on to the castle and the place. But the old name Gebrookhoes or Kasteel Gebrook is still in use, especially in Limburg, where the castle Kesjtieël is called Gebrook and the village is also called Gebrook.
