                              The Almsee is located in the municipality of Grünau in the Almtal, about 11 km south of the center of Grünau.

                              In the Triassic period (approx. 230 to 195 million years ago), most of the rocks of the Northern Limestone Alps were deposited in a shallow sea (= Triassic Sea). This sea had various habitats such as reefs, lagoons and underwater cliffs. In the Jurassic period (approx. 195 to 140 million years ago), the floor of the Triassic Sea broke up, creating basins and sills in between. This led to different deposits: thick layers of sediment formed in the basins, but only thin layers on the sills. In the Cretaceous period (approx. 140 to 65 million years ago), the Alpine mountain formation began - the Alps were folded. In the Tertiary (approx. 65 to 1.8 million years ago) the Northern Limestone Alps rose to form a high mountain range. The remaining basin between the Alps and the Bohemian Massif was slowly filled in, and the Molasse rocks were formed.

                                The Almsee was formed at the end of the Würm Ice Age by a late glacial landslide in the Hetzau (Almtalerhaus). 500,000,000 m³ of rock material was released from the Büchsenkar in the area of today's Jakobinermütze in the Hetza ridge. The masses filled the Hetzau and the valley of the Straneggbach up to the Almtal near today's "Jagersimmerl" inn. This dammed the Alm river and the Weißeneggbach and the Almsee formed behind the alluvial fan of the Weißeneggbach. At the coordinates of the header (northern end of the lake) you can see the longest (12 km) scree tongue in the Eastern Alps.

                                Deep, loamy, decalcified soils are typical for the area. They are rich in nutrients and tend to become waterlogged.
