      The historic port cranes at Rheinauhafen are among the last remaining technical evidence of the former goods transshipment point of an up-and-coming trading metropolis. Today they are listed buildings. However, only six of the more than 35 former cranes have survived. When it opened in 1898, the port had 22 cranes, 16 of which were hydraulically operated mobile gantry cranes and six were basement cranes with a load capacity of 1.5 to 5 tons. Hydraulics were still the predominant drive energy in the mid-19th century. It was not until 1890 that electric motors were introduced. In Cologne, however, they did not want to rely entirely on the new technology and therefore combined both systems. This led to the creation of the power house, which contained electronically driven pumps. These pumps generated pressurized water, which was distributed throughout the port through walk-in channels and thus served to drive the cranes and elevators. Later, more electric and steam cranes were added. Of the six preserved harbor cranes, all but one date from before the Second World War, which is a small miracle for Cologne, which was badly damaged by the war.
