The Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary, also known as the St. Mary's Parish Church, Cathedral Parish Church, Bolzano Cathedral, or Provost Church of the Assumption of Mary, is the parish church of the South Tyrolean capital of Bolzano and the episcopal church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bolzano-Bressanone. While the bishop has resided in Bolzano since 1964, his cathedra and the cathedral chapter remained in Brixen; the Assumption of Mary thus functions as a co-cathedral alongside the Brixen Cathedral. According to the so-called "Bolzano Chronicle," the first parish church of the Assumption of Mary in Bolzano was consecrated in 1180 and was built in the Romanesque style. Legend has it that a Bolzano carter discovered a miraculous image of the Virgin Mary on this site. In the 14th century, the Augsburg master builder brothers Schiche gave the basilica a Gothic dress made of reddish (Grödner) and yellow (Unterlandler) sandstone. The gargoyles and artistically chiseled balustrades are reminiscent of Notre Dame in Paris and are masterpieces of high Gothic architecture.
