The St. Nikolai Church Hamburg-Billwerder was founded in 1180 and is first documented in 1251.
1737-39 was a new building as Bachsteinsaalkirche by the Hamburg architect Johann Nikolaus Kuhn.
The old wooden bell tower was replaced in 1884 by a massive west tower with neo-baroque helmet.
In 1911 the church burned down and was rebuilt by the Hamburg church architect Fernando Lorenzen until 1913, following the old architecture.
