                      The Papststein (451 m above sea level) lies on the left bank of the Elbe River between the villages of Papstdorf and the spa town of Gohrisch. It was the first in the "Land of Stones," which was already accessible by a path in 1780. The discoverer of Saxon Switzerland, Magister Götzinger, also described an ascent of this table mountain. After Prince Friedrich August visited the mountain in 1830, the table mountain attracted interest in numerous descriptions and as a hiking destination.
                      A simple inn was built on the north side of the summit plateau in 1862.
                      Today, a cozy mountain inn stands on this site, with a second building for restrooms, a kitchen, and overnight accommodation.
                      The path leads up between the rocks over many wooden steps and iron stairs. Right on the western ascent is a viewpoint from which you can see the neighboring Gohrisch and the Königstein. From the inn, you have a clear view to the north of the climbing rocks. From the rocky plateau of Tafelberg (slightly above the restaurant), there is a fire watchtower belonging to the state forest, and there are magnificent views of Papstdorf, the Schrammsteine, the Winterberg massif, and the Zschirnsteine. The Deciner Schneeberg and Rosenberg can be seen in the distance.

                      The freestanding rocks, the Kleine Hunskirche and Große Hunskirche, are popular climbing spots. In 1972, there was a massive rockfall on the south side, causing approximately 4,000 m³ of rock to fall into the valley.
