The airport Berlin-Tempelhof was one of the first commercial airports in Germany and took up the regular service in 1923. The area on which the Tempelhof Airport was built - the Tempelhofer Feld - was formerly a parade ground. The first engine flight on Tempelhofer Feld took place in 1909. At the beginning of March 1923, the Junkers Luftverkehrsgesellschaft demonstrated the suitability of the Tempelhofer Feld with special flights from five Junkers F 13 to Leipzig Mockau Airport. The new National Socialist concentration camp KZ Columbia, which was located directly on the new building and opened on December 27, 1934, was closed due to the new building. It was in operation until 5 November 1936 and was demolished in 1938. In 1946, Tempelhof Airport, which is located in the US sector, became the military base mainly used by the USAAF. He got the name Tempelhof Air Base. The airport took on a new meaning in 1948: Together with the airfield Gatow, and later also the airport Tegel, he served during the blockade of West Berlin the transport of food and supplies for Berlin by plane.
