Even before 1648, the city of Bremen had wanted to build a channel from the Geeste to Bederkesa in the period of their rule over Lehe and Bederkesa, but refrained from the appeal of the Bremen archbishop, the ruler over the southern shore of the Geeste.
The Bederkesa Geeste Canal was built in the years 1858-1860, as the Hadelner Canal had long been economically successful and the Kingdom of Hanover, a connection to its new port Geestemünde considered useful. These 11 kilometers were but only until the construction of the Sielanlage Schiffdorfer traffic lock in the Geeste 1898 and only passable at high tide. The tide flood could not penetrate far enough inland through the Siel. Only through the depression of 1935 to 1937 was it possible to travel by barges again. Further depressions for larger cows were between 1957 and 1961.
