    The dam was originally built for flood protection, as indicated by a sign on the dam wall. The Kriebstein Dam is the dam with the largest hydroelectric power plant in Saxony. The dam, which began operation in 1930, serves power generation, shipping, fishing, and recreation. It offers little flood protection.
