Historically important place of Sfakia on a plateau at about 500 m altitude between the sea and the White Mountains. From here the uprising of Daskalogiannis started in 1770, to which the marble monument in the main square is dedicated. In ancient times, Anopolis (=upper town) was a larger city and formed a unit with the port "lower town", today's Lutro.
