The last remnants of the medieval city wall were preserved during the construction of the underground parking garage. About 20 meters are still original. A public restroom is also located here. The adjacent Augustinerplatz is also worth a visit.

It was common for a larger city in the Middle Ages to be protected by a thick city wall. Of course, after its founding in 1120, Freiburg also began to build a city wall to protect houses and people. Starting at Martinstor, it ran along Gerberau to Augustinerplatz, where some spruced-up remains still exist today. There it continued in a slightly curved path to the Schwabentor. Along today's Schlossbergring, it finally turned west before Hermanstrasse and stretched along the street "Auf der Zinnen" and Friedrichsring to Rotteckring. The Zähringer city gate (Christopfstor) stood at the victory monument, where Kaiser-Joseph-Strasse ends today. The city wall continues along the Rotteckring to the university building (KG2). There the city wall turned east until it finally ended again at the Martintor. The two other city gates that led out of the city to the west were located along today's Rotteckring. The Predigertor was on the corner of Rotteckring and Unterlinden. It is named after the preacher monastery, which was located to the west of the old town.

Opposite the city theater was the Lehen city gate. Here the path led out of the city to the villages of Betzenhausen, Lehen and Umkirch. In front of the city wall, a deep moat was built around the city, once to make the city wall appear higher and to be able to fill the moat with water during attacks. But in times of peace it was drained and was mostly used as a place for animals to run. At the city gates a gatekeeper guarded the traffic into the city. If an enemy approached in times of war, he would sound the alarm and the bells in the cathedral would begin to ring. Then the battlements on the ramparts filled up, the citizens took up arms and hoped for the best. A relic of the once accessible circular wall from the old days can still be seen on the east side of the Martinstor. Where the curtain wall once connected to the gate, the remains of a small entrance to the city gate can still be seen.

This is the only place where you can still see the medieval city walls.
