Varying water levels have shaped this silted-up bog for decades, and its vegetation has changed accordingly. Today, during the spring, large parts of the area are flooded. In summer and autumn there are only small areas in the north that are under water. During the summer months, they are covered in duckweed, a tiny aquatic plant. The central area covered with reeds is surrounded by black alder trees, in the southern area and on the eastern shore a small area of bird cherry and ash forest has developed.

The flowing meadow is of great importance as an amphibian spawning ground. The crested newt is the reason for reporting as a NATURA 2000 site. Cranes have been regularly staying in the area of the flow meadow for several years. The greylag goose has one of its few breeding grounds in the inner-city area.
