The building housing the government of Upper Franconia has emerged and grown within its historical context. Situated between the City Church and the Old and New Palaces, the seat of the Upper Franconian district government occupies a central location in the heart of the former royal seat of Bayreuth. Since 1810, the government and its predecessors resided in the former Margravial Chancellery, which dominates Kanzleistraße opposite the City Church. An extension was already overdue before 1900. Construction began in 1902 on the adjacent building on Ludwigstraße at the rear. It was inaugurated on October 20, 1904. The location of the new government building opposite the New Palace made it necessary to adapt the new building to the palace. The facade of the government building therefore blends contemporary Art Nouveau and Baroque architectural elements.
