    Chemnitz had already enjoyed the privilege of being a "beer mile" since 1334. This meant that no beer could be brewed within a one-mile radius of the city, and only Chemnitz beer could be served. However, the "thin beer" of that time was not storable and had to be consumed immediately.

    When the "Beer Purity Law" was introduced in Bavaria in 1516, bottom-fermented lager beer also came to Chemnitz. However, this brewing method required longer and, above all, cool storage. Therefore, it was a good idea to drive tunnels into the eastern slope of the Kaßberg and store the beer there. In the 1530s, several cellars in the Kaßberg were documented for beer storage.

    The simple wooden footbridge over the Chemnitz River, which, along with the Pfortensteg, had been used primarily to reach the bleaching works, was now a wooden bridge over which horse-drawn carts transported the beer to the storage cellars. It was first called the "Cellar Bridge" (Keller Bruck), later the "Beer Bridge."

    The bridge was first built of stone in 1536 and renovated in 1676. It couldn't always withstand the annual snowmelt, floods, and ice floes. It was destroyed by flooding in 1771 and rebuilt.

    It was still used as the "Beer Bridge" until 1778, but then, following the enactment of new brewing and dispensing regulations, the storage of beer in the Kaßberg cellars was discontinued.

    When the Kaßberg access road was built in 1868/69, the Beer Bridge was also renovated. It was relocated a few meters downstream.

    The bridge underwent its last reconstruction and renovation in 2007/2008, as it was needed as a diversion bridge for traffic during construction work on the "High Bridge."
