The source area of the stream is at about 200 m above sea level, in a wetland in Solingen-Obengönrath, west of the Viebachtalstraße named after it. On the first 6.8 km in Solingen it passes under the expressway named after it several times from right to left and vice versa. Near the former Krüdersheider mill, now only a residential building, it reaches the city limits of Langenfeld. In Düsseldorf near Garath Castle, at 42 m above sea level, the Viehbach/Riethrather Bach into the Garather Mühlenbach. It has travelled a distance of around 13.2 km to get there. From here it is another 7.5 km until it flows into the Rhine together with the Garather Mühlenbach near Urdenbach at 32 m above sea level.
