The Perroen (duplicate of bluestone by Jean Sondeijker, 1955) is a reminder of the dual rule of Maastricht: from the eighth century to 1795, the Prince-Bishop of Liège and the Duke of Brabant ruled the city together. The two had been given the management of it by the German Emperor. It is believed that a Perroen already stood on the Vrijthof in 1292. However, it has been demolished and moved several times. The last time this happened was in 1795, when the French occupiers destroyed the Perroen. In 1955, this new Perroen was placed on the Vrijthof. The pine cone and the cross on top of the column are the symbols of the Liège rule.
