St. Bartholomew's Church in the town of Zerbst/Anhalt is a former collegiate and court church. The building, preserved as a partial ruin, stands within sight of the remains of Zerbst Castle in the southwest of the historic old town. The church was the burial place of the Princes of Anhalt-Zerbst. It belongs to the Zerbst church district of the Evangelical Church of Anhalt.

The church is essentially a late Romanesque, cruciform, flat-roofed basilica made of rubble stone. A consecration of this church in 1215 is recorded. In 1300, the church was elevated to a collegiate church. At this time, the choir was extended rectangularly to the east. The nave was expanded in the early 15th century. St. Bartholomew's became a four-bay hall church, the width of the transept. A rectangular western porch was added in 1517. In 1565, the Thick Tower, a former keep located about 20 meters northeast of the church, was expanded or converted into a freestanding bell tower. In the following centuries, the church underwent several renovations and extensions.

In April 1945, a few weeks before the end of World War II, St. Bartholomew's Church was severely damaged during air raids on the town of Zerbst. During restoration work in 1950, a wall was built between the transept and the nave. The nave has since been a structurally separated ruin, while the transept and chancel continue to be used as a church.

With funding from one of the church building programs in the GDR, the sacred ruins were secured and redesigned as an "outdoor community space." The topping-out ceremony took place on May 13, 1988.[1]

The church is Romanesque in its core and has been extended in Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. On the northern end of the transept is a round-arched, columned stepped portal. This dates from the 13th century. Only three of the columns survive. The shafts are ornamented and have foliate capitals. The portal's tympanum depicts a Crucifixion group. Two round-arched windows are preserved in the east wall of the south arm of the transept. The transept and chancel have reticulated vaults created in 1565. The supporting consoles date from the early 15th century. The arches of the crossing were renewed along with the vault. A south portal dates before 1700.

The chancel features lancet-arched windows. Above the east wall, which has a triple window, is a pediment dating from 1565. The top of the gable is marked by an iron figure of St. Bartholomew. On the south side is the former princely crypt, which was later converted into a sacristy. The entrance from the choir to the crypt and sacristy is a Baroque portal from 1700 with a broken gable, crowned with weeping putti. Three niches were added in the choir and the crossing area in the 15th century. A sacrament niche decorated with pinnacles is located at the eastern end of the north wall of the choir on a half-column. A cupboard niche is located in the east wall of the choir near the northern corner. A second sacrament niche is located in the western side of the northeast pillar of the crossing.

In the center of the west wall of the nave is a round window, which may have belonged to the original Romanesque building. In contrast to the transept and choir, the subsequently widened nave features brickwork with only a small amount of rubble stone. Stepped arcade arches are supported by round brick pillars. The vault is destroyed and dates back to the second half of the 16th century, or rather, was renovated at that time.

In the corner between the western vestibule with its keel-arch portal and the northern aisle is a stair tower dating from 1598.

The bells, cast in 1973 by Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock, will be transferred to the thick tower of the St. Bartholomew's Parish in 2023 from the Catholic Church of St. Joseph in Gelsenkirchen-Scholven, which was deconsecrated in 2018.[2]
